How to Read Your Profit & Loss Without Flinching

Your profit and loss statement looks intimidating, but it answers only three questions. Learn those and the rest is detail.

Question 1: Did we make money?

Top line is revenue, bottom line is net profit. Everything between is the story of how one became the other. If net profit is positive and growing, the engine works.

Question 2: Where did it go?

Scan expenses as percentages of revenue, not dollars. A $4,000 supply bill means nothing; supplies at 18% of revenue versus 12% last quarter means something changed โ€” find it.

Question 3: Is the trend our friend?

One month is noise. Compare three months side by side: revenue direction, gross margin steadiness, and any expense line climbing faster than sales. That comparison is the whole job.

Read your P&L monthly with these three questions and you will spot trouble quarters before it spots you.
