5 Receipt Habits That Make Tax Season Boring

Five small habits that turn receipts from a shoebox of dread into a two-minute task.
Nobody loves receipts. But five small habits turn them from a shoebox of dread into a two-minute task.
1. Snap it at the till
Photograph every paper receipt before you leave the shop. Paper fades; pixels do not.
2. One inbox for money
Forward every emailed receipt to a single folder or address. When everything lands in one place, nothing hides in your inbox.
3. Name files like you will search them
Vendor, date, amount — for example, office-supply-2026-08-04-42-10. Future-you says thanks.
4. Attach, do not stash
Link the receipt to the transaction in your ledger the same week. A receipt without a transaction is trivia; attached, it is proof.
5. Shred on schedule
Once a receipt is captured, attached, and backed up, let the paper go. A monthly ten-minute shred keeps the pile from returning.
Do these five and tax season stops being a season at all — just another week.
